“Science is more than a school subject, or the periodic table, or the properties of waves. It is an approach to the world, a critical way to understand and explore and engage with the world, and then have the capacity to change that world...”
– President Barack Obama, March 23, 2015

ITU American STEM INITIATIVE: Your Future Starts Here.

Competency in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is critical for professionals seeking global leadership in today’s competitive, technologically driven economy. The demand for global leaders with STEM background is projected to increase by 62% in 2020. Yet, recent data from the U.S. Department of Education shows that Americans are behind in STEM education. In 2018, the National Science & Technology Council in Washington, D.C. charted a new STEM Education Strategic Plan with the goal to provide all Americans access to high-quality STEM education here in the United States and improve the U.S. standing as a global leader in STEM education.

ITU’s American STEM Initiative aims to help close the gap between American and global STEM education by providing STEM literacy programs, courses, and workshops to enrich student learning by challenging them to think critically, conduct research, problem solve and prepare them to take on leadership roles within the field.

The program features four areas of learning: co-curricular activities, support for professional development workshops, opportunities for discovery research seminar series, and community engagement events to create learning based experiences for students. ITU’s American STEM initiative encourages a more meaningful way for students to innovate and develop a creative approach to viewing and solving real world problems. This interdisciplinary learning experience is designed to cultivate creativity and confidence in the next generation of STEM leaders. Multiple customized course options are available, so students can focus in on particular areas of concentration.

One important learning benefit derived from guest speakers is an enhancement of the social skills including improving communication skills, gaining expert knowledge, networking with others and renewing motivation and confidence. The Life Balance Support pillar aims to increase participation in STEM careers by raising awareness of the successful coexistence of STEM career and family, and by providing the tools to plan for both. This will provide hands-on and relevant learning experiences for all students.
