Announcement - Coronavirus and Attendance

ANNOUNCEMENT:

Regarding the Novel Coronavirus and Attending Classes
March 6, 2020

Dear ITU Students,

Here at ITU, we care about our students’ health. It is our first priority to try to keep our students, faculty, and staff in our school safe. We are closely monitoring the impact of COVID-19 (coronavirus) as well as the recommendations and guidelines that the CDC (Center for Disease Control) has released.

We want to communicate an update about our policy regarding attending class in light of the Novel Coronavirus.

Today our International Student Office Director called the SEVP and received the directive that the Federal Government’s Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) still requires students on F-1 VISAs to attend class in person. This is the policy that ITU must follow. ITU does not want to jeopardize the practice of issuing I-20’s, nor do we want to do anything to threaten the pursuit of your degree study at ITU.

As a precaution and to minimize the spread of germs during your time at ITU, we recommend that students:

  • Bring your own masks, gloves and/or wipes for use in classrooms and commonly-touched surfaces.
  • Minimize any physical touching of other students; do not shake hands.
  • If ill, please request a video appointment from your MD and get a doctor’s note (see below*).
  • We are urging students, faculty, and staff to practice good hygiene including frequent hand washing with antibacterial soap for twenty seconds or more.
  • Cough and sneeze into your elbow.

ITU students should continue attending classes. ITU’s attendance policy states that “Students who miss more than 20% of required attendance will be administratively withdrawn from the course and receive a grade of unauthorized withdrawal (UW). A grade of UW is calculated as an F grade in the grade point average calculation.”

*Any student who is ill should contact their medical provider for a video appointment to determine the illness and if it's the common flu. If your physician believes you are too ill to attend class, he/she will need to write a medical note to that effect. The note should be emailed to the Registrar, registrar@itu.edu. Proper documentation from a medical provider is required for the Registrar to consider medical-related excused absences.

If you will potentially be missing class, you must submit an email request with documentation to the Registrar in order for your request to be reviewed, prior to actually being excused from class. If you are excused from class, you will also need to discuss with your Faculty member his or her requirements for submitting missed assignments.

ITU has issued a travel restriction to China for all university faculty, staff, and students. If you need to travel, please contact the International Student Office (ISO). ITU will continue to monitor the spread of this novel coronavirus and will send updates periodically.

We would like to take this opportunity to share with you some of the things we are doing to help keep everyone safe:

While ITU has regular facility cleaning, we have also implemented a new high traffic area cleaning (doors handles, water coolers, keyboards, etc.) that will take place three times a day throughout the campus.

We are in the process of creating an emergency policy in the case of an outbreak, including but not limited to all classes being held over the internet. We will update you when we have more information.

Sincerely,

ITU Leadership
